Best PC for Working From Home
December 6, 2021
I’ll make this post as simple as possible because it took a bit of time to actually get decent information on how to do so. I gave my old laptop to my mom and wanted to make it a bit faster so that she can use it for her work.
We bought an SSD with a size of 128GB. I asked her to get the smallest size since she’ll be mainly using it for work which involves some basic browsing and mostly using Microsoft excel. First things first get yourself an SSD and make sure that it will be compatible with the slot on your laptop. I recommend going into a physical store if you’re not confident on how to check and if you don’t want to open the laptop yourself. I did the latter part since my laptop was still under warranty. Something to take note of is if the store is trying to charge you on placing the SSD on your laptop then by all means find a different store to make your purchase. Silicon Valley in Mall of Asia is one of the stores that doesn’t charge you extra for placing the SSD inside your laptop.
Now here’s the tricky part. Getting the windows operating system transferred from your HDD to your SSD. All the stores I visited always say the same thing. They charge extra to work on this process which ranges from 1,000 to 1,500 pesos. Here are the simple steps on how to clone your Windows operating system into your SSD:
1. Download Macrium Reflect here and install it on your HDD. Choose the Home use. It’s absolutely free!
2. Open Macrium Reflect and you should see the screen below. If you don’t have enough space on your SSD then just check the partition where your Windows Operating System is installed.
3. Click on “Clone this disk” and then a window will pop out.
4. Select a disk to clone to which is your SSD.
5. Click next, then Next again to skip the schedule option.
6. Once you see the screen below just click on Finish.
7. Click Ok
8. Click continue and then close once done.
That’s it! You can now boot up your laptop using your SSD. Simply go to your Bios setting which varies depending on the brand of your laptop. An easy way is to go to Recovery Options:
Click Restart now from Advance Startup, Troubleshoot, Advanced Options, UEFI Firmware Settings, then click restart.
You should be able to enter the Bios window now where you can change the boot sequence to your SSD. That’s it! You have saved yourself 1,000 to 1,500 pesos worth of labor fee which you can do yourself within 2 hours or less depending on how many files you have on your HDD.
